The Chaplain provides a full ministry of pastoral care and spiritual support within NLCS community. This includes performing a full range of professional chaplain assignments in a full-functioning capacity.

Considerable independent judgment is used to make decisions in carrying out assignments that have significant impact on services or programs provided to residents, families and staff. Some responsibilities include:

  • Provides immediate and long-term care of the spiritual needs and concerns of residents. Provides the full range of sacraments and rituals of the religious community
  • Welcomes new residents with a visit making them aware of chaplaincy services within two weeks of admission
  • Maintains a pastoral relationship with all residents by setting a goal of visitation with each resident during a two-year period
  • Ministers to families of residents at the time of death; participates in the planning for funeral or memorial services and conducts services as requested
  • Serves as the contact person in times of crisis and significant events
  • Conducts several weekly Worship Services; arranges and conducts other rites: i.e. baptisms, marriages, installations
  • Provides other worship or study experiences as requested
  • Partners with Director of Development in efforts to further the visibility and interest of NLCS to include speaking to congregations, synod conferences and other groups
  • Writes articles monthly for “NLH Connections” newsletter
  • Produces “Pastoral Care Status Reports” for inclusion in Board of Trustees meeting materials as required
  • Serves as a training resource to student interns, new and veteran staff, and pastoral peers as to the spiritual needs of the residents
  • Performs other administrative support activities as the position requires


  • Board Certified Chaplain preferred
  • Three year’s of experience as an ordained minister on the clergy roll of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America required
  • Completed at least one unit of accredited Clinical Pastoral Education required
  • Able to relate and work well with others
  • Demonstrated experience in partnering with a diverse team of employees, managers and supervisors
  • Experience giving presentations, public speaking and marketing retirement housing concepts to community groups preferred
  • Visibility requires maintaining a professional appearance and providing a positive company image 
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills; able to maintain confidential information
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office; must be able to develop presentations and documents
